Lastly, we too, have a six-year-old boy who has never slept well. I don't know if this would just exacerbate the problem for you guys, but we got a little lamp for Bennett, and he's allowed to look at books as long as he wants, as long as he's quiet (of course, he's got to be ready to have it turned off by the time I'm going to bed, so I can turn off the light, but he's generally asleep in time for that). Or you could just try playing Flood for him after tucking him in.
